The "Ninety-Ton" crane which once serviced ships at Victoria Dock. Before the arrival of shipping containers, items would be typically loaded onto ships by hand or by cranes using nets.
The ninety Ton crane was one method of increasing the speed of loading items such as coal - the crane had the capability to lift the railway wagons full of coal over the ship then, using an additional chain, tip the wagon in mid air to unload the contents into the cargo hold.
